After birth, as a baby grows and becomes more engaged with the surrounding world, there is a maturation of the primary senses. An infant’s ability to taste, smell, hear, touch, and see increases their interaction with the environment as these senses develop.

Some child care experts think that sensory development can encompass motor responses via an infant’s central nervous system. This is commonly referred to as sensory processing or sensory integration. This blog will explore sensory development in infants and how parents can assist with the sensory maturation process.

Parents and caretakers of young infants should remember that no two babies develop at the same rate or are intrigued by similar sensory stimuli. While some babies are mesmerized by the rich colors and beauty of the world around them, others may seek human interaction as their primary source of sensory stimulation. It is important for parents to determine their infant’s preferences and build from there.

Many infant child care researchers think that sensory stimulation preferences during infancy are established potentially for life. A young child who reacts positively to visual stimuli is likely to enjoy art and other visual components during adolescence and possibly beyond, which can evolve into a future professional preference of painting, photography or other art activities.

Investing in a sound preschool education for your child is one of the best investments you can make as a parent. In a proper preschool environment, overseen by a qualified teacher, your child will learn and accomplish much in a short period of time. We will take a closer look at why investing in a top preschool education for your child is so important:

    The interactive aspect:

Preschool may be the first time that your child is exposed to a group of his or her peers. Learning to interact with fellow students is an important skill, especially moving forward into kindergarten and elementary school. Preschool will introduce your child to problem solving in a group, in addition to group play. It will also teach your child valuable skills such as waiting for a turn to speak. Childcare specialists have also noted that when a child is not well socialized at an early age, there can be a likelihood of aggressive behavior later in life.

    The cognitive aspect:

Your child’s cognitive development really blossoms in preschool. Most foundational education facilities have specialized programs that offer age-appropriate activities in order to encourage this development. Many facilities will start to introduce reading, letter recognition and basic numerical skills.

    The independence aspect:

Preschool may be the first time that your child spends extended periods of time away from mom and dad. Introducing your child to a preschool environment will instill a sense of independence in your child. Completing tasks without the help of a parent is one of the first steps that your child will take to gaining independence.

  • Matthews Childcare: How to Improve Your Child’s Brain Development

Brain development is an important part of the modern foundational education. Although studies have proved inconclusive as to how the average child’s brain develops, there are ways in which you as a parent can help stimulate brain development. The information below lists some of the ways parents can help improve brain development in their child and in preschoolers.

    Breastfeed from birth

Numerous studies have linked positive brain development to breastfeeding. There are approximately three hundred and fifty to four hundred nutrients that are found in a mother’s breast milk which are not present in baby formula. Many of these, including fatty acids, helping to foster positive brain development in your child. It is preferable to feed your child breast milk for the first five to six months of life.

    Positive experiences

Most childcare experts appear to agree that the things your child experiences from a young age can help cement memories. This means that your child is able to preserve what he or she is learning. These positive experiences need to come from you, as the parent. Infants enjoy meaningful, emotional, contact and interaction with their parents. It is also important to note that this interaction works both ways.

    Interact with your child

Do not be afraid to interact with your child. When chatting face-to-face with your child you are helping to increase the connections between different words and sounds. Point to a child and say his or her name, sing simple nursery rhymes, and make use of hand motions. Interact with your child wherever and whenever you can.

Music has a powerful effect on our emotions. Parents know that a quiet, gentle lullaby can soothe a fussy infant. Parents and child care providers can help nurture an infant’s love of music by:

    • Singing to your child. Hearing your voice helps your infant develop language skills.

      • Singing with your child. Teaching your child words with music helps brain development as the brain learns words more quickly and retains them longer.

      • Sending your child to a child care center that has a curriculum that encourages music and singing.

Researchers believe that musical training actually creates new neural pathways in the brain.

Choosing a child care center that is focused on your child’s brain development

If you are looking for child care for your infant, Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Matthews is a leading academy in infant care. Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Matthews focuses on developing your child’s brain, and also on ensuring that your child care feels cared for and loved. Specialists say that a child needs to feel safe and needs to form an emotional connection with their parent or child care provider in order for their brain to develop properly.

Your infant will be taught preverbal sign language so that he or she can communicate his needs to our child care providers. Some of the subjects that we explore with very young children include math, science and problem solving, since these are considered important ways to encourage brain development. Our teachers also incorporate singing into the curriculum so that your infant can learn words faster, retain words longer, and develop their brain while having fun.

Becoming familiar with your child's unique behaviors of crying, noises or gestures is how you learn to understand him/her and meet their needs. For this reason Kids 'R' Kids of Matthews teaches sign language to infants at their Learning Academy.

Sign language streamlines a unique two-way communication process that is effective and satisfying for both you and your child. Your infant is able to let you know, for example, not just that he/she is unhappy but that the unhappiness is due to being hungry. This allows you to respond to your child's needs quickly and with far less frustration.

Sign language assists a parent in keeping pace with a child's development. Language skills take many years to fully develop. Most children are not able to say their first words until they are around one year old. Subsequently, it takes some time before they have a useful vocabulary. Sign language makes use of the motor skills and communication skills that are developed fairly early. Teaching a child basic signs from about 6-8 months means they'll have a considerable vocabulary within one year.

Useful words that your child can learn to sign include: hungry, thirsty, hot, cold, play, bath, and scared. Parents enjoy teaching signs as a bonding experience with their child and it provides a strong line of communication. Praising your child for learning new signs encourages and challenges them to remember the signs. This interaction assists with cognitive, motor and language development which stimulates brain cells and neural pathways that are essential for future learning.

At Kids 'R' Kids Learning Academy of Matthews, we include teaching sign language as part of our infant care program along with activities that nurture cognitive, socio-emotional, language and physical development. Our philosophy of "hug first, then teach" ensures that your child feels loved and nurtured during his/her stay with us.
